Stop Traumatizing Drills

Active shooter drills have become a popular solution to prepare and protect students. But a dangerous variation of these drills hurts students rather than helping them. Active shooter simulations mimic a real-life shooting. Students should never have to participate.

Mass Shootings in Michigan

Michigan has seen several high profile mass shootings in on student campuses in recent years. In February 2023, a shooter on the Michigan State University campus in Lansing, Mich., gunned down eight people, wounding five and killing three, before ultimately taking his own life. The Washington Post had reported that “[b]y nearly every meaningful measure, 2022 was the worst year of school shootings in history.”

In fact, one Michigan State University student has been retraumatized after a year of mourning the loss of her friends in the Oxford High School shooting. In that shooting on November 30, 2021, four students ranging in age from 14 to 17 were killed and seven others were wounded.

“We are proud to work with the bipartisan champions to ensure we're doing everything we can to protect our kids and that millions more students will be trained to know the signs of violence and act to save lives. Our work does not end here, we will continue to bring our prevention programs to schools and communities across the country and advocate for life-saving policies.”
