Our Mission

The mission of Sandy Hook Promise is to educate and empower youth and adults to prevent violence in schools, homes, and communities. Through our proven, evidence-informed “Know the Signs” programs and sensible bipartisan school and gun safety legislation, we teach young people and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others.

What We Do

Working across the gun violence, education, and mental health policy sectors, the Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund:

Develops and passes original bipartisan gun violence prevention and youth safety legislation at the federal and state levels to protect children in schools, homes, and communities.

Expands leadership on gun violence prevention and forges new common ground by building champions and fostering partnerships with Republican and Democratic lawmakers at the federal level and within “Red,” “Purple,” and “Blue” states.

Attracts and engages a growing and diversified base of supporters who champion our evidence-informed approach to gun violence prevention and advocate for our policy platform.

Issues Overview

National Issue

Children deserve to be safe and free from gun violence. Our dedicated Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund staff and growing grassroots network of supporters work to pass proven policies that advance gun safety, school safety, and youth mental health.

Take action with us now to make change in your state and at the federal level to prevent gun violence and keep our students safe.

National Issue

With effective policies in place that ensure firearms are used safely and legally, we can prevent tragedies. Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund is working to expand background checks on all firearm sales, pass temporary transfer (i.e., extreme risk protection) orders, create secure storage laws, limit access to highly lethal semi-automatic firearms (i.e., assault weapons), and institute limits on high-capacity magazines.

These policy initiatives, in addition to expanding access to community-based violence prevention programs, can protect children from gun violence.

National Issue

Violence prevention education programs train students and educators to recognize when someone may be exhibiting warning signs of hurting themselves or others and teach them how to seek help. Legislation that creates and funds these programs can ensure more students in states across the country have access to evidence-based training.

National Issue

Keeping youth safe also means supporting their emotional and mental well-being. That’s why the Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund works to expand access to life-saving mental health services and supports for students, including suicide prevention training and school-based care. Taking care of the whole child, both in physical safety and mental wellness, creates supportive school environments that can reduce the risk of violence and self-harm.
